West Africa’s journey towards cleaner, more sustainable port operations continues to gather momentum, with two major container terminals demonstrating how electrification is transforming the region’s logistics sector.
Meridian Port Services (MPS) Terminal 3 at Tema Port in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire Terminal at the Port of Abidjan are setting new benchmarks for low-emission container handling through significant investments in electric equipment and charging infrastructure.
At MPS Tema, a strategic partnership between Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, APM Terminals and Africa Global Logistics, terminal expansion includes the introduction of 16 electric rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes and 20 electric terminal trucks, with a further 41 electric terminal trucks arriving during 2026. The development also includes plans for rooftop solar installations, which will initially power terminal buildings before supporting wider port operations.
Meanwhile, Côte d’Ivoire Terminal at the Port of Abidjan has been operating 13 electric RTG cranes and 36 electric terminal trucks since 2022. The terminal, developed through a public-private partnership between the Ivorian State, Bolloré Africa Logistics and APM Terminals, has increased the port’s annual handling capacity by approximately 1.5 million TEU.
In recognition of their commitment to reducing emissions and adopting cleaner technologies, both terminals have been awarded the Green Terminal label, highlighting their leadership in the decarbonisation of West African ports.
A key enabler of the electrification programme at MPS Tema is the charging infrastructure supplied by Kempower.
