PATERSON SIMONS DELIVERS SPECIALISED MACHINERY PACKAGE TO LONG-STANDING MINING CUSTOMER IN WEST AFRICA

In Mining, News, News Snippets by Alisa Evans

Paterson Simons is a main supplier to many mine sites across West Africa. A recent supply from Paterson Simons to a longstanding mining customer in the region is typical of the type of specialised package we thrive in delivering.  The supply included a Grove RT550E rough terrain crane, a Manitou MT-X 1840 A telehandler with attachments, a Konecranes 4531 TCE5 Liftace Reach stacker, and lifting gear to be used for work on their mining site.

The Grove rough terrain cranes are the first choice of most mines in the region – they are quick to deploy and set up for routine maintenance lifts. The RT550E was supplied with an Auxiliary Hoist package which enables the crane to complete small lifts quickly without having to re-reeve the main hook block. The model is fitted with cab-controlled cross-axle differential locks for front and rear which enhances the crane’s ability to handle the rough terrain of a mining site. The RT550E’s Auxiliary lighting package includes a flashing light and boom-mounted floodlight which is a useful feature on any mine as night falls around 6 pm across most of the region. The crane was also fitted with an outrigger position monitoring system which increases safety when operating the crane. The crane was supplied with new lifting gear and outrigger levelling plates to increase the stability of the crane on uneven ground.

The Manitou MT-X 1840 A telehandler was supplied with a range of attachments including a man basket/platform, a bucket, and a P1000 extension jib. The machine was fitted with an option to enable the operator to control the use of the machine from the man basket which fully complies with European CE Regulations. The addition of the bucket enables the machine to perform light duties for handling waste, moving sand/dirt, and loose rock. The jib extends the forward reach of the telehandler.  All the attachments can be quickly fitted to the machine and an appropriate load chart is automatically selected to enhance safety.

The Konecranes 4531 TCE5 Liftace Reach stacker, is excellent at handling many containers per day, which the customer needed on their mining site. With some rigging slings added to the Reach stacker, this machine can lift many types of cargo. The Reach stacker is versatile and adaptable and handles containers efficiently and safely, on firm level ground, on the mining site. Slings and shackles can be attached to lifting eyes on the spreader, which further increases the versatility of the machine to enable it to handle project cargo. See an example of how a Reach stacker efficiently works on a mining site here.

All the machines were specified with tier 3 engines, suitable for the higher sulphur diesel found in the region. We also ensured operator comfort by including air-conditioning, and roof and windshield visors on all machines. The machines were added to an existing fleet of lifting equipment for which we have been providing on-site maintenance team for several years.
