Konecranes has introduced a new automated gantry travel solution for its Automated Rubber-Tyred Gantry cranes (A-RTGs), enabling terminals to operate in mixed-traffic container yards without the need for major yard redesigns or restrictive fencing systems.
The newly launched feature allows fully automated gantry long travel in environments where trucks, terminal vehicles and other equipment continue operating alongside the cranes. According to Konecranes, the solution improves both safety and operational efficiency while reducing the manual workload traditionally associated with RTG operations. It is available for new A-RTG deliveries as well as retrofits for existing fleets.
The development forms part of the company’s broader “Path to Port Automation” strategy, which provides terminals with a phased route towards increased automation and smarter yard operations. Konecranes says the technology is designed to help terminals modernise gradually without requiring complete infrastructure overhauls.
The solution was officially launched during TOC Europe 2026 in Hamburg, where Konecranes showcased its latest automation technologies for container handling operations. Paterson Simons was pleased to attend TOC Europe 2026 alongside industry leaders, OEMs, terminal operators and logistics specialists from around the world. The event provided valuable insight into the latest developments in port automation, smart terminal operations and sustainable cargo handling technologies shaping the future of the global ports industry.
As the authorised representative for Konecranes Port Solutions across West and Central Africa, Paterson Simons continues to support ports and terminal operators in the region with equipment supply, technical expertise, commissioning, aftermarket support and long-term operational solutions. Increasing interest in automation, safety and yard efficiency across African ports is expected to drive further adoption of technologies such as automated RTGs in the years ahead.
