In 2017 China Harbour broke ground on the new Tema Container Terminal port expansion. Valued at $1.5bn the new expanded Tema terminal will be run by Meridian Port Services, a JV between Bolloré and APMT. The project is scheduled for completion by end 2019, and will triple Tema port’s capacity to 3m TEU annually, making it the largest port in West Africa.

Interestingly the Tema port expansion will rely on a breakwater, built from 3m cubic tonnes of rock which will form the 3,8 kms long breakwater. The expansion will also include a deep water channel, for new generation ships with a draft of 16 meters.

The new site will include new offices for both MPS and GPHA, as well as a new workshop and a self-contained power station.
