GPHA TERMINAL, GHANA: Reachstackers – A Dedicated Solution.

In Solutions by Alisa Evans

When a new dedicated container terminal was proposed for the main port of Tema in Ghana Paterson Simons made a strong bid based on our proven expertise and commitment to service. With plans for the terminal to run on two shifts per day and with a large fleet of reachstackers and empty container handlers as the backbone of the operation we recognised the need for exceptional support by the standards of West Africa.

Given the fleet size and with full support from Konecranes we made a commitment to ensure major components (engines and transmissions) were in stock in our warehouse in Ghana. We also made arrangements for a large stock of general parts to be available locally.

In terms of technical support, again by arrangement with Konecranes, we arranged for a Konecranes engineer to be on-site to oversee the fleet for the duration of the warranty period, to provide technical support, to train operators and engineers. As a result of these initiatives the terminal had 99% availability during the first year of operation.

Since the opening of the new terminal port congestion in Tema has become a thing of the past. PSAL is pleased to be associated with the terminal which has set a new standard in West Africa. This has been recognised as such and we now provide similar support to fleets in new terminals all over the region.
