SHAPING A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE — KONECRANES E-HYBRID RTGS WITH BATTERY-BACKED CONTINUITY!

As ports worldwide continue to focus on decarbonisation, Konecranes E-Hybrid  Rubber-Tyred Gantry (RTG) crane combines onboard battery power with established grid connection options such as busbar or cable reel systems. This dual approach allows terminals to benefit from electrification while retaining flexibility in environments where power stability may vary.

Unlike conventional electric RTGs that can require high peak power demand, the E-Hybrid model is designed to significantly reduce peak load requirements to no more than 60kW. By managing charging through onboard energy storage, terminals may be able to lower infrastructure upgrade costs and optimise overall yard power distribution.

Operational continuity is another key advantage. The onboard battery system enables the crane to continue operating during temporary grid interruptions – a practical consideration for terminals operating in regions where grid reliability cannot always be guaranteed.

The solution has already attracted industry attention, with orders confirmed for large-scale terminal developments, including new container facilities in India, with deliveries expected from 2027 onwards.

The launch forms part of Konecranes broader electrification strategy aimed at supporting more sustainable cargo handling operations.

As terminals balance environmental targets with productivity demands, hybrid RTG technology continues to move firmly in the direction of smarter energy use and reduced emissions.

For ports across West and Central Africa, where infrastructure development and energy stability remain key operational considerations, hybrid solutions such as this may offer a balanced pathway forward. As terminals modernise and expand capacity, equipment that reduces emissions and safeguards uptime, whilst helping to minimise infrastructure investment is increasingly relevant to the region’s long-term growth strategy.
